PUTUSSIBAU, SP – Researchers at the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s Research and Development Center for Research and Development of the Ministry of Health have proposed three things after going straight into researching kratom cultivation in Kapuas Hulu. One of them, they recommended that kratom be developed as a raw material for medicine. “Our proposal is that the development of kratom as a raw material for medicine, the establishment of kratom trade system needs to be done, and the legal status of kratom needs to be decided immediately,” said the Research and Development Agency Research and Development Agency of the SD-Yankes Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Ondi Dwi Sampurno, Friday (30/8) . The Minister of Health commissioned the National Research and Development Agency to study Kratom in depth. This activity is to provide an overview of the use of kratom in the community, and its impact on aspects of health, ecology, and social economy. All are used as a policy input in Kratom settings. “Our aim is to confirm the results of the RTD (Round Table Discussion) meeting on kratom with cross-sectors in Solo, and obtain samples for preclinical testing and phytochemical profiles of kratom leaves,” he said. The study was conducted in four districts, namely South Putussibau, North Putussibau, Kalis, and Embaloh Hilir. Sources of information were obtained from Bappeda, the Health Office, KKPH, PMD, the police, kratom associations, business actors both collectors, farmers, and kratom processing workers. They also interviewed Kratom users, FORCLIME, Community Empowerment Institutions, agricultural extension workers, village facilitators, sub-district officials, and Puskesmas.

“Information gathering is done through discussions, interviews, environmental observations, collection of specimens such as seeds, seeds, cuttings, leaves, crumbs, and powders. Then secondary data analysis,” he explained. The results showed kratom contains mitragynine which is classified as New Psychoactive Substance (NPS), so it is necessary to regulate its use and distribution. The Ministry of Health is currently working on the regulation. Other results, from the aspect of health, there was no change in the pattern of disease in the community after kratom consumption. They use it to increase stamina, reduce pain, gout, hypertension, diabetes, insomnia, wound healing, diarrhea, coughing, increase appetite, cholesterol, and typhus. “There were no health complaints related to the use of kratom, nor the health impact on workers who often intersect with kratom. There were also no side effects after routine use, and they did not cause dependency symptoms, “he said. Kratom is consumed by boiling fresh leaves or powder, for drinking. Some respondents added honey, or orange juice. Some people use it to treat wounds by sprinkling squeezed leaves, or fine powder. However, in processing, it was found a way of drying that did not meet hygienic standards causing microbial contamination. Also found production or postharvest processes that do not meet occupational health. While from the socio-economic aspect, kratom creates new jobs and increases family income. In Embaloh Hilir sub-district, 90 percent of the people actually earn income from kratom businesses.

As a result, the dropout rate has decreased, public education has increased, and able to send them to universities outside Kapuas Hulu. “Kratom gives a higher activity, or a longer time for farmers compared to rubber,” he explained. In addition, Kratom helped drive the land and water transportation business. The habit of consuming alcohol was changed to kratom consumption. In terms of crime, theft, fights, and commotion due to alcohol intoxication also decreased. “Kratom prices are standardized at the level of farmers and collectors but have declined since the issue of banning kratom. Information circulating on social media both the prohibition and the danger of using kratom causes people to be afraid to plant and use kratom, “he explained.

The unclear status of legality means that Kratom’s business has not been able to contribute to regional income and cannot utilize village funds. In the past, the use of kratom was only found in forests and used wood for furniture and land boundaries. Now, kratom is cultivated and leaves are taken with a fairly high economic value. From an ecological aspect, kratom is planted in yards, gardens, and river banks or open spaces. Kratom is chosen because the community grows fast, it can be harvested after six months, so it can replace income from tapping rubber. “Other crop choices are coffee, agarwood, cocoa, petai, fruits. “Most people grow kratom by monoculture,” he explained. Because it is planted by the river, kratom also functions to prevent river abrasion, greening, and reforestation. Kratom is suitable for planting in Kapuas Hulu which often experiences ups and downs and puddles. Other plants cannot live in such a place. Kratom is also said to be able to reduce CO2 gas emissions. PJ Kapuas Hulu Regional Secretary, Sarbani, hopes that kratom is not banned, but is limited by regulation in its management. This is important so that the community’s economy can continue to run. “From the researchers’ report, there seems to be a fresh breeze related to kratom,” he said. Sarbani asked the farmers not to cut down kratom beforehand, and to be wise in receiving developing information. “We have brought these researchers so that there is definite clarity regarding kratom content, mainly related to the benefits and disadvantages,” he said. Chairperson of the Indonesian Kratom Association (AKI) of West Kalimantan, Wawan Nopianto agreed with the Ministry of Health researchers’ proposal that the Kratom trade system is regulated. Everything must start from the regulation of business licenses. The entrepreneur must have a permit, and then the trading system is regulated. “Because of efforts strengthened by legal entities and regulated by the trading system, that is the basis for legalizing Kratom Law,” he said.

The existence of these rules will actually benefit all parties. “This is because of mutual benefits starting from managers in farmers, exporters, shipping services, and the government,” he said. In line with the Governor Previously, West Kalimantan Governor Sutarmidji supported the development of kratom. He emphasized that in some countries this plant was sought, meaning that there were no restrictions. Kratom has health properties.
“That’s good traditional medicine, we should not talk about this kratom may or may not. “What we need to talk about now is that pharmaceutical companies must conduct research to use this kratom as a raw material for medicines,” he explained. Sutarmidji has already asked for an explanation from BPOM. When it comes to opium, he thinks coffee and cigarettes are the same. Staying further investigated which are harmful and not. “This item must be examined in the laboratory. “I have done that and know what elements, their uses, and this is very good for medicine,” he explained. If kratom can be processed in a factory, its potential will be extraordinary. Supposedly, there are drug companies that take it. Now, this business reaches abroad and there are no problems. “What does it mean, don’t turn it off, we have to find a solution. I ask from the Ministry of Health to research, “he explained. In particular, he was reluctant to discuss the potential of Regional Original Revenue (PAD) from kratom. According to him, the government does not only think about regional income. Community welfare is far more important. “If we want to take all community activities into local revenue, when will he move forward. It must be the government that makes him go forward, love capital and completeness, “said Midji.
